The publication of Des Marets sand Rathery sedition of Rabelais sworks, in 1857, marked a new epoch in the study of Rabelais. To this edition was prefixed a Life, by Rathery, in which, for the first time, all the legendary matter was carefully pruned away, and no fact was admitted that was not based upon trustworthy evidence. During the last fifty years this biography has held the field, and except for one or two important discoveries made by M. Heulhard in connection with Rabelais svisit to I taly, and embodied in his book, Rabelais, his Travels in I taly, his Exile at Metz R abelais, ses Voyages en I talie, son Exil a Metz) (1891), little addition has been made to our knowledge of Rabelais until very recently. But at the close of 1902 a fresh impetus was given to Rabelaisian studies by the foundation of the Societe des Etudes Rabelaisiennes, with M. A bel Lefranc as its first President.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book presents a critical biography of François Rabelais, one of the most illustrious literary figures of early 16th-century France. The book draws on a wealth of newly discovered archival evidence to paint a more complete picture of the man and his life. It challenges many assumptions about Rabelais's early life: the book reveals he was born in 1495 and not 1483 as traditionally claimed. The book also presents fresh interpretations of his life, arguing for example that his early education was in a Franciscan friary rather than a Benedictine abbey. The author shows that Rabelais was a man of vast learning, not only in medicine, but across many fields. Engrossed in the spirit of the humanist movement, he was an ardent advocate for the new learning. Rabelais emerges from this book as a figure of great complexity and fascination, a man whose work continues to be read and enjoyed today.
