The facts of fatigue are conveniently divided into muscular fatigue, sensory fatigue, and mental fatigue. That the division is an artificial one does not need any explanation, for the individual is an organic whole and a change in any part of the body is more or less accompanied by a change of the whole. Muscular and sensory activities are, as a rule, connected in various ways with the central nervous system. It is, moreover, very difficult to get mental activity which is entirely free from muscular and sensory accompaniments. Hence the division is made for convenience. When the terms mental activity and mental fatigue are used in this monograph, it does not mean that they are entirely independent of muscular and sensory activities or fatigue. We have generally used mental multiplication as a type of mental work, for the reason that its process contains hardly any sensory and muscular elements. Previous investigations of mental fatigue fall into four classes, based on its influence on: Organic processes, motor power and reaction time, sensibility of the skin, and the efficiency of mental functions. I. The Investigations of Mental Fatigue Through I ts Influence on Organic Processes Investigations have hitherto been confined to three processes: namely, pulse, temperature, and metabolism. Acknowledgments are due to Professor E. L. Thorndike and Professor R. S. Woodworth for their suggestions as to the general plan of the experiments and to Professor J. McK. Cattell for his advice. The authors gratitude should be expressed to Mr. T. Haraguchi for assistance in connection with the form of presentation of the facts.

Forgotten Books' Classic Reprint Ser
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into mental fatigue and its impact on physiological processes, mental functions, and motor power. In doing so, it examines the results of prior work from the 1800s and early 1900s on heart rate, body temperature, and metabolic changes related to mental fatigue. The author also discusses how researchers have measured fatigue through its effects on skin sensitivity and motor functions, while exploring the influence of mental strain on attention waves. The book's key contribution lies in its detailed analysis of mental fatigue's influence on intellectual tasks, which challenges the prevailing mechanical theory of fatigue and argues instead for a more nuanced understanding of its causes. It concludes by highlighting the vital role that individual variation and by-products of mental work play in determining susceptibility to fatigue. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
