Explore the real roots of urban misery and what it means for policy, charity, and everyday life.
This volume surveys the causes of modern hardship in cities, drawing on wide research and the author’s own observations. It explains how poverty, unemployment, migration to towns, and shifting industry create hardship for families, and why simply offering relief may miss the bigger picture of social conditions.
Misery and Its Causes discusses how society can respond—through better employment systems, smarter public policy, and thoughtful investment in social reform rather than relying on charity alone. It presents practical ideas about organizing work, improving living conditions, and balancing budget concerns with the need for humane programs.
Ideal for readers of social history and policy who want a grounded view of how poverty and social distress arise—and how communities can address them.

Misery and its Causes, like Professor Patten s New Basis of Civilization, with which this series began, attempts to articulate a new social philosophy, pragmatic, economic, and socially adaptable to the existing conditions of American life. Both volumes contain in substance the Kennedy lectures for the year of their respective publication, as prepared for the School of Philanthropy on a foundation made possible through the generosity of Mr. John S. Kennedy, for the express purpose of creating a literature of social work which shall guide, inspire, and make more efficient the busy practical worker who must replenish from time to time the sources of his energies in order to serve with power.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

This book explores the causes of human misery in modern society, arguing that the hardships faced by the poor are often due to social and economic inequality rather than individual failures. The book examines the relationship between poverty and crime, mental illness, and other social problems, suggesting that a compassionate and just society must focus on improving conditions for all its members.
