The author explores the history of the subject, discussing the work of Bianchi, Backlund and Darboux among others, and establishes a theorem of permutability for transformations of surfaces previously established by Bianchi. The book goes on to develop transformations of surfaces known as 'F' transformations, showing that most transformations that have been developed recently are reducible to F transformations or transformations of surfaces into focal surfaces of W congruences. In doing so, the author coordinates the results of many investigations and provides a basis for further research in the field.
