Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is designed to aid orchardists, vintners, farmers, and others concerned with the subjects treated. It conveys practical information about insect species harmful to cultivated plants, and those interested in earthly produce in general. Freed from technical jargon wherever possible, the author retained scientific names only to assist the reader in referencing scientific works. Despite his lack of formal scientific training, the author spent years devoted to the study of economic entomology, eventually engaging in extensive practical investigations into the realm he had previously only read about. He was drawn into the field of experimentation and investigation through his business. In 1874, he began manufacturing fruit boxes in Sacramento, California, when the codlin moth appeared in some orchards, threatening the fruit of the region. Naturally, its damage would affect his business, and thus, he was drawn to consider means to protect it. He therefore entered the field of investigation, as he found the textbooks and treatises did not provide the desired information, at least not such as he was able to find in the literature of the subject. In 1878, he began to share the results of his inquiries with the public through the columns of daily and weekly press. He was among the first to recognize the dangers posed by insect pests to the fruit industries of California, and his work was instrumental in raising awareness of these threats and in developing effective strategies for controlling them. This book presents the results of his eight years of investigations, providing a valuable resource for anyone interested in protecting their crops from insect damage. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
