The author presents a series of experiments in which animals given small amounts of alcohol over time became more susceptible to the toxic effects of acetonitrile, a substance whose poisonous effects are generally attributed to the slow formation of cyanide in the body. The experiments suggest that alcohol may increase an organism's ability to break down the acetonitrile molecule and that this happens because the animals develop increased powers of oxidation. The author also notes that their results provide evidence that in some respects the physiological processes in moderate drinkers are distinctly different from those in abstainers.
