This book presents a study of growth and development with particular attention to plants and colloidal reactions, taking into consideration such factors as temperature, acids, and organic compounds on hydration and overall growth. Departing from the notion of specific substances necessary for the initiation of growth and differentiation as previously posited, the author argues that growth is more a matter of states and combinations within living material. Observations show that growth is an extraordinarily complex phenomenon, with varying rates dependent on temperature and other environmental conditions, and affected by factors such as metabolism, respiration, and diffusion. The author concludes that protoplasm can be usefully examined as a colloidal system of gels and sols, with a continuous or external phase and a discontinuous or internal phase - a conceptualization that sets the stage for further investigation into the dynamics of cellular growth.
