§1. The resistance of the air will be neglected in our preliminary investigation. Let the origin 0 be taken as the centre of the muzzle of the gun and the velocity of the shell at the point 0 be and let its direction make an angle ϕ with the horizon; ϕ is called the "angle of departure"; the vertical plane through the initial tangent is called the "plane of fire."
This plane of fire through 0 is taken as the plane of the coordinate axes; and the axes of x and y are the horizontal and vertical lines through 0 in this plane.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the complex world of ballistics, exploring the theoretical and practical aspects of projectile motion. The author meticulously examines the behavior of projectiles in a vacuum, laying the foundation for understanding their real-world trajectories. Taking into account factors like air resistance, gravity variations, and even the Earth's curvature, the book offers a comprehensive analysis of how projectiles travel through the air. It delves into historical and scientific perspectives, referencing renowned figures like Newton and Mach, while providing detailed calculations and formulas for those seeking deeper understanding. The book's insights are not merely theoretical; they have practical applications in fields like artillery, weaponry, and even space exploration. By illuminating the forces that govern projectile motion, this book provides valuable knowledge for anyone interested in the science of how objects fly.
