The author suggests that, contrary to common belief, the primary cause of the disease is not the bacterium previously thought to be responsible (B. suisepticus) but may in fact be a different, previously overlooked bacterium (an inulin fermenting streptococcus) or even a combination of the two bacteria. Evidence is presented from a study of 100 apparently healthy pigs and 314 pigs with varying degrees of pneumonia. The author further examines the related inflammatory responses produced by these bacteria. The book provides a significant contribution to our understanding of the causes of pneumonia in pigs and challenges current assumptions about the roles of specific bacteria in the disease.
