This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book provides a comprehensive exploration of retaining walls, exploring their theoretical underpinnings and practical design considerations. From the initial principles of determining earth thrusts to the detailed analysis of stability and overturning, the author presents a thorough examination of the subject. Combining the latest theoretical insights with historical context, the book delves into the evolution of retaining wall design theory, tracing its origins to the pioneering work of Coulomb and Rankine. It critically evaluates various approaches, including the graphical method, analytical method, and experimental method, offering a balanced perspective on their strengths and limitations. The book is not just a theoretical treatise; it also serves as a practical guide for engineers and architects. It includes detailed design procedures, empirical methods, and practical tables, providing valuable insights for the design of stable and efficient retaining walls. The author emphasizes the importance of understanding the interplay between earth pressure and structural stability, highlighting the need for a holistic approach to retaining wall design. Through numerous worked examples and case studies, the book illustrates the application of theoretical concepts in real-world scenarios, showcasing the critical role of retaining walls in infrastructure development and slope stabilization. This book serves as an indispensable reference for engineers, architects, and students involved in the design and construction of retaining walls. Its clear explanations, comprehensive analysis, and practical guidance make it an essential resource for anyone seeking to deepen their understanding and enhance their proficiency in this field of study.
