Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book focuses on the authors and literary works created in Devonshire up until the year 1640. It begins with a brief yet thorough history of the county's literary scene up to that point and is divided into four distinct periods. The author highlights the most revered works and figures of each period, such as the works of Winfrid, a scholar and poet born in 680, or Simon Ash, who wrote a metrical adaptation of Boethius' "Consolations of Philosophy" in the 12th century. The book delves into the social and religious influences on the writings of the day. It also examines how the works of authors like Joseph of Exeter, an acclaimed poet whose works were lauded by Dante, reflected the political environment of the time. The author explains that this book is the first comprehensive examination of Devon's literary history and offers a fresh perspective on the region's significant contribution to English literature. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
