Master German quickly with a complete, conversation‑driven course that builds real language skills.
This edition lays out a two‑part plan: Part I teaches by story, grammar, notes, and exercises, while Part II provides reference material on letters, word formation, pronunciation, and history. The design emphasizes practical use and gradual mastery, with plenty of examples and guided practice. Rich illustrations and historical notes offer engaging context without slowing study.
The book supports both self‑study and classroom work, guiding you from everyday conversation to deeper understanding of German structure. You’ll encounter structured reviews, idiomatic phrases to memorize, and progressive exercises that reinforce what you learn. A thorough vocabulary and index help you locate information quickly.
Ideal for students of German, self‑learners, and teachers seeking a solid, practical foundation in the language.
Ideal for readers of language education materials and anyone building solid German skills through a structured, method‑oriented approach.

Emphasis, therefore, is here put on distinctions in the meanings of common words, though forms and syntax are not neglected. A bove all, the book aims to be practical. The ideal way to teach German composition is to use nothing but German in the classroom. But this presupposes pupils who are prepared to think in German, and such students have already reached a state of proficiency far beyond the scope of this volume, which is intended as a practical step toward an ideal goal. Though not made for the purpose of forcing the direct method upon teachers, this Composition like the German Grammar and Im Vaterland readily lends itself to the use of German in the classroom. A partial list of the books used in preparing the Composition will be found in the Teachers Handbook, but in the treatment of many words and constructions, especially where no book sufficed, I have drawn not only on my own experience, but also on that of many German
