Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book explores the dogmatic discussion of different forms of the Soma sacrifice in connection with two important ceremonies, the Vagapeya and Ragasya. The Vagapeya, a political ceremony, is recognized as one of the different forms (samstha) which a single Soma sacrifice may take. The Ragasuya, or inauguration of a king, is not a Soma sacrifice but rather a complex religious ceremony that includes Soma sacrifices of different kinds. The author considers several fundamental forms of the Soma sacrifice, presupposed by the Vagapeya, which have special features that stamp them as political ceremonies. The author argues that the Vagapeya should be arranged in much the same way as the Ragasuya, with certain other Soma sacrifices preceding and following it, corresponding to other rites of the Ragasuya. The Vagapeya is often treated as a redundant Agnishtoma, as an Agnishtoma with the Ukthas, or as a short form of the Shodasin sacrifice. The distinctive feature of the Atiratra sacrifice is an overnight performance of chants and recitations. The author questions whether the Atiratra and the analogous Aptoryama are really one-day sacrifices or rather ahina sacrifices, which may be considered as intermediate links between the two classes of Soma sacrifice. This book is a valuable resource for understanding the different forms of the Soma sacrifice and their significance in ancient Indian religious practices.
