This book is a close exploration of the feud between King Charles I's jester, Archie Armstrong, and Archbishop Laud, a man second only to the king in power in 17th century England. Laud was keen to rid the Church of England of what he saw as the corruptions of the Reformation and bring it nearer into line with Rome, resulting in increased tension between the Crown and its Scottish subjects. Armstrong, a known sympathiser with the Scottish Covenanters, taunted Laud as a monk, and a rogue.
