Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book documents the historical development of reproducing ancient manuscripts. In the 17th century, some of the first copies, which were significant for their time, were made. However, it was not until the 19th century that photographic reproduction became more widely available with the invention of photolithography, photogravure, and phototypy. These methods led to mechanically reproducing manuscripts in a way that was faithful to the original and free of human error. The author, a scholar and director of the University Library of Leyden, goes on to provide context on the scholarly pursuit of reproducing the most valuable and inaccessible manuscripts. The author includes his own proposals for how best to manage this work through a dedicated group of international librarians. Ultimately, the book argues for the benefits of widespread manuscript reproduction for the preservation of historical knowledge and the advancement of research. By making these manuscripts more widely available, scholars have a greatly improved opportunity to study a wider range of sources.
