Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book began as an 1882 offer by Enoch Pratt to establish a free and open library for the citizens of Baltimore, Maryland. The author proposed to build a central library and furnish it with volumes of literature, as well as establish multiple branches throughout the city. The offer was met with approvals, a newly formed Board of nine Trustees was incorporated for the management of the Pratt Library, and thus the grand vision was set into motion. This book is the record of that vision and its fulfillment and chronicles not only the construction of the building, its opening day ceremonies, and subsequent expansion into branch libraries throughout Baltimore, but also the ongoing efforts of the Pratt Library to provide sanctuary for ideas and information to the people of Baltimore. It will be of great interest to librarians and other municipal professionals, as well as to general readers with a taste for local history, architecture, and social change in the late 19th century. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
