Synopsis

This book presents the narrative of Lieutenant Linai T. Helm, one of two officers who survived the infamous Chicago Massacre of 1812. A soldier rather than a scholar, Helm's firsthand account, written in 1814 at the request of Judge Augustus B. Woodward, brings readers directly into the heart of this tragic event. Woodward's letter introduces Helm's narrative, explaining its significance and the controversy surrounding its release. The massacre, a brutal attack on Fort Dearborn by Native American tribes, is examined through the lens of Helm's experiences, providing a unique perspective on the complex historical context of the time. Helm's poignant retelling not only sheds light on the events leading up to the massacre but also explores the broader themes of betrayal, survival, and the devastating consequences of war.
