Huntingdonshire and the Spanish Armada: Original Manuscripts Revealing a County’s Defense in 1588
This edition presents a detailed view of how Huntingdonshire prepared to defend England against the Spanish Armada in 1588. It draws on original manuscripts that include the county’s muster rolls, official despatches, and letters from key organizers like Sir Henry Cromwell. The material highlights local loyalty, organization, and the mix of religious resolve with military readiness that carried England through a perilous moment in its history.
The narrative centers on the county’s response, the roles of local leaders, and the ways communities formed volunteers and trained for battle. Readers will see the human side of defense, from the call to arms to the practical tasks of provisioning and equipping troops. The book also situates these efforts within the larger national effort and the famous Channel actions that shaped the war’s outcome.Les informations fournies dans la section « Synopsis » peuvent faire référence à une autre édition de ce titre.
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book provides an account of the preparations made in Huntingdonshire in 1588 to resist the Spanish Armada. It is taken from a manuscript once in the possession of Lord de Ramsey, but now in the British Museum. The author draws on despatches from the government of the day, as well as letters from Sir Henry Cromwell, who played a prominent role in organising the county's forces. The book sheds light on the position of the Cromwell family in the county and the national spirit of loyalty to Queen and country, in a time when the country was preparing to defend against an invasion. The author argues that loyalty reached such a pitch of enthusiastic devotion that the Queen, in speaking to her troops at Tilbury, declared that rather than survive the ruin and slavery of her people, she would herself lead her soldiers into battle and die with them. Letters show that some concern was still paid to the old county divisions, with each hundred being required to furnish about one hundred men. This book gives an insightful glimpse into a critical time in English history when the outcome could have had profound and long-lasting effects on the country. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
