Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book assesses the viability of several long-standing regulations on media ownership established by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Given the rapid and transformative evolution of the broadcasting and cable industries, the author examines the ongoing debate surrounding the limitations imposed on station and cable ownership combinations within specific markets and the ownership of various combinations of media types (television and radio stations and cable systems) in the same market. By analyzing historical data on advertising rates, profits, and other variables, the author finds little evidence to support the argument that large media corporations use their ownership advantages to engage in anti-competitive behavior, despite concerns raised by critics. Ultimately, the author concludes that the FCC's media ownership regulations may be unnecessarily restrictive and that a more flexible and case-by-case approach to market concentration would be more effective in promoting diverse viewpoints and preventing anti-competitive behavior while still allowing media companies to reap the benefits of operational efficiency and economies of scale.
