Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book offers a glimpse into the state of Irish prisons in the early 1800s. The authors, as part of a Quaker delegation, spent several months visiting and inspecting prisons, asylums, workhouses, and other charitable institutions in Ireland. The authors generally praise the improvements made in Ireland's prison conditions in the recent past, particularly the growing adoption of practices like regular inspection, solitary confinement, prison labor, and education for inmates. They find these reforms to be in keeping with both religious and progressive values. In contrast to these improvements, they find that debtors' prisons both in Dublin and elsewhere remain in a dreadful state, where inmates suffer from hunger and are subject to extortion. The authors are also concerned about the widespread practice of capital punishment and the public executions that accompany it. They argue that the frequency of these spectacles brutalizes the population, while the brevity of the suffering involved does little to dissuade potential criminals. They urge the Irish government to continue the recent trend of leniency in carrying out death sentences and to ultimately move towards the abolition of capital punishment.
