The author, a palaeographer, meticulously inspected the volume and discovered anachronisms in the writing style and physical characteristics of its annotations, which suggested they were not made in the seventeenth century as had been claimed. The corrections were published in 1852 by John Payne Collier, with the claim they were made by an unknown old corrector soon after the Folio's initial publication. The author compares the published corrections to the physical evidence of the manuscript and concludes the alterations were a modern fabrication. An accompanying inquiry explores the questionable authenticity of other purportedly old documents Collier released around the same time. These revelations challenge prior assumptions about the texts of Shakespeare's plays and shed light on the history of literary forgery.
