In this fascinating work, the author explores the fundamental question: how do organisms such as the vibrio Metchnikovi and cholera vibrio acquire greater virulence when introduced into vaccinated animals? Throughout their compelling inquiry, the author goes into detail regarding the essential modes of this change, beginning with the immunity or tolerance that a guinea pig demonstrates on being reinjected with cholera. The author meticulously documents experiments that study the length of time bacteria live in the bodies of vaccinated animals, their behavior in the presence of specific antibodies, and their ability to cause infection or death. Using the example of cholera, the author also explores the phagocytic theory of immunity proposed by the renowned Metchnikoff. The author illustrates how the vibrio cholerae organism rapidly diminishes in number outside of the host organism but multiply quickly inside a living animal that is unable to destroy them, demonstrating how phagocytes can destroy these organisms. The author also explains how vibrios that evade phagocytosis can evolve into more virulent strains, capable of causing fatal infection, despite the host's antibodies. While the author does not discredit the importance of serum in immunity, the experiments in this book present compelling evidence supporting the vital role of phagocytic cells, particularly leucocytes, in the body's defense mechanisms, in both resisting the initial infection and the development of new, more virulent, strains of bacteria.
