Excerpt from Theory of Groups of Finite Order
The present treatise is intended to introduce to the reader the main outlines of the theory of groups of finite order apart from any applications. The subject is one which has hitherto attracted but little attention in this country; it will afford me much satisfaction if, by means of this book, I shall succeed in arousing interest among English mathematicians in a branch of pure mathematics which becomes the more fascinating the' more it is studied.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
British mathematician William Burnside (1852-1927) studied at Cambridge University and was later appointed Professor of Mathematics at the Royal Naval College in Greenwich, UK, where he spent his career. Burnside published more than 150 papers on mathematical topics. Cambridge University Press published the first edition of his classic book, Theory of Groups of Finite Order, in 1897 and in an expanded second edition in 1911. For the next 40-plus years, this book was the classic introduction to group theory, a worthy ancestor of Marshall Hall's The Theory of Groups, first published in 1959 and also now reprinted by Dover.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the theory of finite groups, a branch of mathematics that explores the properties and behaviors of groups with a finite number of elements. The author approaches the subject from a unique perspective, emphasizing the intrinsic properties of groups rather than their specific representations. The book begins by establishing the basic vocabulary and definitions of group theory, including concepts like group operations, subgroups, and orders of elements. It then explores several fundamental properties of groups, such as the relationship between the orders of a group and its subgroups, and the existence of subgroups with specific properties. The author also delves into the concept of group isomorphism, which examines the similarities and differences between groups with the same underlying structure. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the theory of finite groups, suitable for students and researchers seeking a deeper understanding of this fascinating mathematical subject. Its clear explanations and rigorous approach make it an invaluable resource for anyone interested in the foundations of group theory. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
