Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book explores the historical origins of free trade and its impact on British businesses and society from 1815 until the time of its writing in 1882. The author takes a strong stance against the reaction against free trade policies, which were gaining traction as a result of economic depression. The author believes strongly that protectionist policies would be harmful to Britain and makes his case by contrasting the economic state of Britain during periods of free trade with its economic condition during periods of protectionism. He further argues that the apparent economic depression of the 1870s is not the result of free trade policies, but rather a result of poor harvests and other problems. Instead of seeking a solution to Britain's economic woes in protectionist policies, the author suggests that the government should turn its attention to resolving the issues causing the poor harvests and other economic problems. He believes that protectionist policies would backfire, harming not only consumers, but ultimately British businesses as well.
