This book covers the history of the conquest of Canaan as led by Joshua, the successor of Moses, along with the division and settlement of the conquered land among the tribes of Israel. It also includes the provision for the establishment of a theocracy in that country. The author skillfully combines themes of both historical and religious importance, including God's guidance of his people, their faithfulness, and apostasy, along with their eventual worship of Jehovah or their falling away into idolatry. This book follows on from the Pentateuch, continuing the history of the theocracy from the death of Moses to the time of Eli, under the administration of 13 Judges who were raised up by God in moments of special crisis, to restore social order and deliver the Israelites from foreign oppression. It illuminates the transition period of about 300 years, from the theocratic republic to the theocratic monarchy. The author's approach is characterized by piety, Christian catholicity, and amiableness of spirit.
