A moving portrait of two early abolitionists whose lives show courage, charity, and public conscience.
This edition presents the memorials of Thomas Shipley and Edwin P. Atlee, two Philadelphia figures whose work advanced the rights of the oppressed and pushed for abolition. Through biographical sketches and accounts of their public actions, the book frames a history of principled activism grounded in faith and civic duty. It offers a window into the debates, dangers, and daily work of reformers in the antebellum era.
Ideal for readers interested in American reform, abolitionist history, and the personal stories behind social movements.

Excerpt from Brief Memoirs of Thomas Shipley and Edwin P. Atlee: Read Before the Pennsylvania Society for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery, &C, Tenth Month, 1837
Dear Friend - It is with feelings of pleasure, which we are at a loss for words adequately to express, that we perform the duty assigned us, of presenting the enclosed copy of a resolution adopted at the last meeting of the "Pennsylvania Society for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery," &c., expressive of its approbation of the Memoir upon the life and character of our dear, departed friends, Thomas Shipley and Edwin P. Atlee, prepared and read before the Society. The satisfaction which the Society, as well as the large and respectable audience assembled on the occasion, enjoyed, has prompted the request contained in the resolution. To such a requisition, no additional weight can be attached; we will simply express our hopes that it may be complied with.
At a meeting of the "Pennsylvania Society for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery," &c., held Eleventh month 2d, 1837, the following resolution was adopted:
Resolved, That the thanks of this Society be presented to Dr. Isaac Parrish, for the excellent and appropriate Memoir of Thomas Shipley and Dr. E. P. Atlee, read at the last meeting of this Society, and that he be requested to furnish a copy for publication to the Committee of Arrangement.
Dear Friends - Your very kind letter, enclosing a resolution of the "Pennsylvania Society for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery," &c., in regard to the Memoir read by me, on the evening of the inst., was received.
