Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book outlines a new theory in diffraction, extending geometrical optics to fully describe diffracted fields. This extension, called the geometrical theory of diffraction, incorporates certain additional rays called diffracted rays and complex or imaginary rays into the analysis of wave propagation in inhomogeneous media. The diffracted rays are associated with boundaries or discontinuities of the medium, while the latter are associated with refraction shadows that occur in the absence of boundaries. Not only does this theory characterize the new rays, it also provides a method for calculating the field associated with them. The author explains this method and applies it to a number of problems, also demonstrating how the new theory agrees with exact solutions of boundary value problems for partial differential equations. This book will be of interest to anyone involved in the study of wave diffraction.
