Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book narrates the history of Cohocton, a town established on land purchased from Massachusetts by Oliver Phelps and Nathaniel Gorham in 1788. These lands, originally owned by the Iroquois Confederacy and Sir William Pulteney, an English Baronet, were sold in various sections over time. One of the first settlers of the town was Richard Hooker, who, along with his family, traveled from Maryland to escape his Quaker community's views on slavery. He settled in Cohocton in 1791, becoming the town's first resident. In 1794, Joseph Bliven was sent to build the first tavern in the town, which became the community's center of activity, hosting meetings and serving as the town's first schoolhouse. Other early settlers included Joseph Shattuck, a veteran of the Revolutionary War, and pioneers like Samuel Chamberlain, who arrived in 1809 and lived in a dug-out shelter. The author provides a rich account of the lives of these early settlers, detailing their struggles and successes in establishing a community in the wilderness. The book highlights the challenges faced by the early settlers, including harsh weather, lack of infrastructure, and the constant threat of conflict with the indigenous population. The author paints a vivid picture of the hardships and triumphs of these pioneers, whose collective efforts laid the foundation for the town of Cohocton.
