The first theory views an object as gradually changing its shape until it is split, at which time the original object ceases to exist and two (or more) new objects come into existence. The second focusses instead on chunks of material which are part of the overall object. A chunk persists with constant shape until some piece of it is cut away, when the chunk ceases to exist. The author proves that the two theories are equivalent under ordinary circumstances, and shows that they are sufficient to support some simple commonsense inferences and algorithms. The author acknowledges that there are limitations to their approach, but the theories yield insights that are as close as one can come to the intuition of object behavior without drawing arbitrary lines. The book's analysis of the kinematics of cutting solid objects should appeal to researchers in artificial intelligence, knowledge representation, and computer graphics.
