Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book presents a method for studying the Navier-Stokes equations using Lagrangian coordinates, which simplifies their treatment by moving the grid with the flow. The author provides a new fractional step method that is faster than the method originally proposed by Peskin. It uses multigrid methods for the solution of the resulting systems of equations, which enables the method to be used to conduct experiments on grids of substantially larger size. Another advantage is the use of finite difference operators constructed with the aid of Voronoi diagrams, which increases the computational efficiency. The method is applied to a periodic domain in the plane, with the author describing an efficient algorithm for the construction of Voronoi diagrams in such domains that can be generalized to higher dimensional spaces. Numerical experiments indicate that the method is of first order and convergent. The author also describes an algorithm for immersed boundaries, which allows for the treatment of elastic boundaries immersed in the fluid. Overall, this book provides a significant contribution to the field of computational fluid dynamics by introducing a new fractional step method for the Navier-Stokes equations that is more efficient than existing methods and can be applied to larger problems.
