Excerpt from The Mohawk Trail: Its History and Course With Map and Illustrations
The building of the new State Highway across Hoosae mountain was an event which turned a great volume of travel through a region which had been little appreciated, and seen by necessarily few tourists. With this great volume of travel over a splendid highway, bearing a name which implies a history of its own, there was awakened a desire to learn what that history is.
Many travelers have asked what justification there is for supposing that there ever was an Indian trail across the mountain, and many more who knew that a trail did exist, were eager to know at what places they traversed the ancient path.
In an endeavor to satisfy these inquirers, this story of the Trail has been written.

Originally an Indian footpath, the Trail witnessed countless journeys of traders, migrating tribes, and later, European settlers. The author meticulously traces the Trail's evolution, from its use by warring Native American factions to its crucial role in the French and Indian Wars. Through vivid historical accounts and detailed descriptions of the changing landscape, the book immerses readers in the Trail's rich tapestry of human stories. We encounter courageous individuals like John Sheldon, who braved treacherous winter journeys to rescue his family from captivity, and experience the anxieties of settlers living in the shadow of conflict. The narrative also explores the complex relationship between the Mohawks and European colonists, highlighting the strategic importance of the Trail during times of war and uneasy peace. Ultimately, this book offers a profound reflection on the enduring legacy of the Mohawk Trail.
