Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book analyzes one of the most critical economic debates in history: free trade versus protectionism. The author takes aim at a pamphlet written by the British Prime Minister in 1903 that suggested free trade was a failed experiment and demanded the ability to place tariffs on foreign imports. The author demonstrates that the Prime Ministerâs arguments were riddled with inaccuracies, including that England adopted free trade only after other countries had, when in fact it was the other way around. The Prime Minister also claimed that foreign nations were conspiring to destroy British industry when in fact Britainâs main trade partners were not, and had not been for many years, protectionist states. The author goes on to examine the Prime Ministerâs arguments for tariffs, finding that they rest on a series of false assumptions and misunderstandings about how free trade works. The author concludes that the Prime Ministerâs arguments for protectionism were not only economically unsound, but also historically inaccurate, and therefore free trade remains the superior economic system.
