Specifically, the author argues that the first seven vials of wrath detailed by the book are fulfilled in the progression of political and ecclesiastical power. Through these lectures, the author sees the Franco-Prussian War as the outpouring of the first vial, and the events of the third vial as having been fulfilled in the campaigns of Napoleon Bonaparte in northern Italy, the birthplace of many Christian martyrs. Sympathetic to the cause of Italian unification and a diminution of papal power, the author sees these conflicts as punishments for Rome's sins and harbingers of coming transformations in the world order, discussing the role of republicanism and the future of religious and political life.
