Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is a theoretical study of sound propagation based on the groundbreaking work of Wang Chang and Uhlenbeck. It explores this molecular effect from a fresh perspective, employing kinetic models proposed by E.P. Gross and J.L. Jackson. The author develops a three relaxation time model capable of producing Euler, Navier-Stokes, Burnett, and thirteen moments equations for smooth phenomena. Dispersion relations are derived and novel features of sound propagation are uncovered. Intriguingly, kinetic models are found to be unable to describe phenomena beyond a certain wave number and compensate by introducing an unphysical dispersion pattern for higher wave numbers. The author further suggests that the phase speed of sound waves achieves a maximum value. Uniqueness, existence, and boundedness of solutions to the initial value problem are demonstrated for any model equations. Asymptotically, the solutions approach hydrodynamic behavior. Through this comprehensive analysis, the book contributes to our understanding of sound propagation and the modeling of kinetic theory. It is a valuable resource for researchers in statistical physics, fluid dynamics, and related fields.
