This book compares three methods for solving a system of linear equations, namely, the Gauss elimination method, a stationary linear iterative method, and a Monte Carlo method. It establishes a basis for a theoretical comparison of the amount of work required by each method to achieve a given accuracy. The Gauss elimination method is shown to be more efficient for small systems, the stationary linear iterative method for intermediate-sized systems, and the Monte Carlo method for large systems. The book also provides a detailed discussion of the Monte Carlo method for solving linear equations, including a new minimum-variance arrangement of the method that exploits an initial estimate of the solution to reduce variance. The author derives and compares certain general linear and polynomial iterative methods for matrix inversion, and demonstrates the construction of a Monte Carlo arrangement for solving matrix inversion problems. The book concludes with a discussion of the relative advantages and disadvantages of the three methods, and provides guidance on choosing the most appropriate method for a given problem.
