Synopsis
This book examines a dynamic scheduling problem faced by single-server production facilities operating in a dynamic stochastic environment, such as those that produce according to customer demand rather than producing to fixed schedules. The author considers a multi-class queueing system that can process a variety of job classes. After jobs are processed, they enter a finished goods inventory that services customer demand. The scheduling problem involves determining when to release jobs to the queue and which job class, if any, to serve next. The author develops an effective scheduling policy that minimizes the long-run expected average cost incurred per unit time, accounting for backordering finished goods inventory, holding finished goods inventory, and holding work-in-process inventory.
