The author traces the development of this historical consciousness from its origins in the tension between the competing Christian and pagan religious paradigms that followed the reign of the Emperor Julian. The theory of history that emerges from this conflict is predicated on the belief in the existence of an innite deity and a perfectible human class. In this framework, progress is understood as a movement away from the world towards an ever-expanding, innitely self-perfecting class of mankind. This teleological outlook suffuses our understanding of knowledge, power, and reality. It leads to a historical consciousness that sees the present as merely a stage in an ongoing, innite process towards a utopian future. This model of history, the author argues, has dire implications for our understanding of ourselves, and for our ability to act meaningfully in the world.
