The author, a Fellow of the Royal Society, begins by discussing the need for an ample supply of fresh water in ships. He then presents his method for distilling large quantities of water with little fuel, which he discovered while working on a means to sweeten stinking water. The author also discusses the benefits of ventilating air up through water with a bellows as a way to dispel noxious vapors and improve air quality. This technique, which involves having air pass through a perforated box positioned at the bottom of a still, is shown to significantly increase the rate of distillation. As part of this discussion, the author presents accounts of how his method was employed in various ships and the positive results that were observed. The book concludes with a series of additional suggestions for improving the health and safety of those who work or travel by sea.
