This book focuses on the issues with integrating software systems. The author notes that, in many cases, powerful software systems are incompatible with one another, and implementing effective interfaces between them can be costly and time-consuming. As a result, the author presents a new concept in information systems architecture: Composite Information Systems (CIS). The author describes a structural model of CIS that can be used to study existing information systems. They identify eight generic types of CIS, based on the types of data and system incompatibilities among the CIS components. The author then discusses several areas of CIS that require further investigation, including mechanisms for resolving component incompatibilities, performance implications of these mechanisms, and development of a functional model of CIS. The author concludes by noting that CIS is a relatively new concept in Information Systems architecture and that the study of CIS can help system designers to develop more effective ways to integrate software systems.
