The author coins the terms competence-destruction and network externalities to describe organizational and economic effects respectively, and argues that understanding how radical innovation impacts both organizational competence and network externalities experienced by customers and suppliers is key to understanding why firms succeed or fail in the face of radical technical change. The author provides multiple case studies and econometric analysis that ultimately support a conclusion that incumbents who succeed are those whose value-added chains experience the least competence destruction and obsolescence of network externalities.
