Synopsis

This book presents an examination of the stages by which animals evolved and came to inhabit the land; the cohesive forces holding them together into species; and their response to their physical and biotic environment, with special reference to their parasites and pathogens. The author reconstructs how life on Earth progressed from the simple one-celled organisms some 3,500 million years ago to the diverse plants and animals we have today. The book covers everything from the swimming and burrowing animals of the Palaeozoic Era to the insects and reptiles that dominated the Mesozoic Era, and on to the emergence of mammals in the Cenozoic Era. It considers how the environment has impacted the evolution of life forms, how animals have evolved to adapt to their particular environments, such as burrowing, flying, and climbing, and how other animals have adopted parasitic habits, dependent on other species for their survival. The significance of this book is that it uncovers the major events and patterns that underlie the history of life on our planet; from the simple to the complex, and the small to the large.
