Unlock the basics of lithography and chemical printing, from ink to plate. This edition explains how early printers coaxed oil and fat from stone to create bold, repeatable images. Learn how mixed inks, stones, and acids work together to produce durable plates for paper, fabric, and more. The book also reveals how new printing ideas linked to metal plates and transfer methods opened doors to innovative techniques.
Inside you’ll find practical, step‑by‑step guidance drawn from the author’s own experiments. Discover how to prepare stone, mix chemical inks, and achieve reliable results with both relief and intaglio styles. The text covers choosing materials, testing mixtures, and anticipating how different fats and soaps interact with stone surfaces. It also explores methods for multi‑color printing and transfer printing, offering a clear path from concept to finished print.
Ideal for readers of printing history, artists exploring lithography, and students seeking hands‑on methods for traditional printing.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
Excerpt from The Invention of Lithography
Alois Senefelder, not only the inventor, but the father and perfecter of Lithography, wrote this story of his life and his invention in 1817. The translator has followed his style closely, because he felt that the readers would prefer to have this English edition represent Senefelder's original German faithfully.
When Senefelder wrote, he had to invent many names for the processes, manipulation-methods, and tools. These terms have been translated literally even where modern practice has adopted other names.
