Excerpt from Corolla Numismatica, Numismatic Essays, in Honour of Barclay V. Head: With a Portrait and Eighteen Plates
The present volume requires but few words of introduction; but it may be interesting to put on record a few details as to its origin. On the occasion of Mr. B. V. Head's retirement (june 30, 1906) from the Keepership of Coins in the British Museum, it was felt that some unofficial recognition should be made of the great services rendered by him to the study of numismatics during a period of more than forty years. The suggestion was warmly welcomed, and a committee, consisting of Sir John Evans, Sir Henry Howorth, Messrs. H. A. Grueber, Warwick Wroth, and G. F. Hill, was formed with a View to issuing a volume of numismatic essays, to which contributions should be invited from a number of scholars versed especially in those questions on which Mr. Head's own researches have thrown light. An appeal for subscriptions to defray the cost of the publication was circulated, and met with a most generous response from numismatists and personal friends in all parts of the world. The invitation to contribute articles was also accepted by nearly all those scholars who received it, although the names of one or two, who were prevented by the pressure of their engagements from complying, are unfortunately absent.
