Excerpt from The Structure of the Atmosphere in Clear Weather
The investigation of the Wind currents of the air above the surface layers is one of the greatest importance in the study of meteorology; one reason for the Slow advance made by this science in the last fifty years is to be found in the fact that until quite recently meteorologists only took note of that part of the atmosphere that was close to the surface Of the earth, and beyond some cloud Observations and a few isolated records, such as those obtained by Glaisher, nothing was known of the conditions existing in the free air. The recent rise Of aviation and its probable extension in the near future make it more than ever necessary to investigate the nature of the currents in the free air above the surface Of the earth.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book explores the structure of the Earth's atmosphere in clear weather through the analysis of over 200 pilot balloon observations. Compiled by the author, these observations were gathered over a period of several years and reveal the complex and dynamic nature of our atmosphere. The book begins by describing the methods used to observe pilot balloons and the techniques employed to calculate wind velocity and direction at different heights. The author then presents a series of case studies, each of which provides a detailed analysis of a specific balloon ascent. These case studies demonstrate the wide variety of atmospheric structures that can be encountered, from relatively simple, steady-state conditions to complex, time-varying patterns. The book concludes with a discussion of the implications of these findings for our understanding of atmospheric dynamics and climate.
