Unlock how English words grow from their parts and families, with practical, classroom-ready practice.
This practical class book helps students discover the meanings of English derivatives by studying prefixes, suffixes, and root words. It guides learners through the process of deriving words from roots, using illustrated examples and step-by-step exercises. A strong emphasis on usage, spelling, and pronunciation makes it a hands-on resource for building vocabulary and understanding how words connect within families.
Part One and Part Two structure lessons around key word parts, cross-referencing in the index, and opportunities for students to apply what they’ve learned. The book also highlights how words appear in definitions and how to trace hidden relationships among related terms. It includes suggestions for teachers to expand work and reinforce retention through oral and written practice. The pronunciation guidance draws on a contemporary dictionary and practical examples, making it useful in real classroom settings.
Ideal for readers learning word origins, vocabulary-building, or preparing for exams, this edition supports teachers and learners alike.

Excerpt from English Derivatives: A Practical Class Book
1. The grading necessarily destroys alphabetical order; an index, however, provides for the finding of a root-word at the head of its section. See pages 161-166.
2. The work demanded at the close of each section should be done in writing. Oral work in great variety may be had in the recitation period. A fine interest accompanies the discussion of many words which depart in meaning from their etymology. The book yields to the teacher's right, in such work, to provide all the value of freshness.
3. The meaning of a common prefix or suffix is readily found by means of the list on pages 157-160. For example, section 19 refers to -ant as a suffix, -ile as a suffix, and comas a prefix. Each of these affixes is given in its alphabetical position in the Index. The teacher may, if he sees fit, improvise much more work of this sort. For instance, in the same section 19, the suffixes -er and -al appear incorporated in the words mercer and commercial. These suffixes have already been noted, -er in section 3, and -al in sections 14 and 15; so that the teacher will be justified in developing oral or written work upon them.
4. Many references are made to numbered sections. In section 2, the figures 203, following the word utensil, tell the pupil to go forward to section 203, where he finds that utensil is derived from usus and finds also other members of the family. Almost all such cases concern words that are treated subsequently; the teacher will find large opportunity to make his own demand that words previously treated be retained by the pupil.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
