Within the book, the author details experiments conducted on dogs, as the author found their respiratory system suitable for studying as it pertains to humans. While some of the research presented was merely to confirm already known functions of the respiratory system, some shed light on interactions never before observed. Some experiments conducted produced results that would be expected, such as a subject expiring after water is drawn into the lungs through the trachea. Other experiments produced unforeseen results, like the respiratory system experiencing reex inhibitory action upon the heart and respiration when exposed to direct ame inhalation. The author concludes that the research presented in this book can be applied to the present day to better inform emergency medicine and respiratory system surgeries.
