Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book documents the 1907 strike by female telephone operators in Toronto, Canada. The strike was caused by the company's decision to increase the operators' work hours from five to eight per day. The operators felt this was too physically demanding, especially with the enormous telephone business of the city, and they were also underpaid. The strike precipitated a full investigation by the Canadian government due to the importance of the telephone system to the national interest. The author examines the nature and extent of the telephone company's business in Toronto, as well as the growth and extent of the company itself. It also covers the strike, its precipitating incidents, course and outcome. The author investigates the larger issues the strike raised, especially surrounding the working conditions and pay equity for women in the early 20th century workforce. The book sheds light on the often-overlooked history of women in the workforce, labor organizing and the struggle for equitable treatment of working women.
