This book comprises a series of findings following an inquiry into the future development of Wisconsin's permanent forest reserves, established to protect timberlands. The inquiry was undertaken by a Special Legislative Committee, instructed to investigate the best use of the reserve and surrounding areas. The Committee travelled extensively, visiting farms and holding hearings with landowners and local experts; it also visited forest reserves in neighboring states and gathered information from the relevant forestry departments. Their findings center on whether the reserve lands would be better allocated to agricultural use and whether this would benefit the people of Wisconsin. The Committee also explored the relative merits of natural forest regeneration versus artificial planting. They concluded that while some non-agricultural land within the forest reserve could be used for farming, the majority of the reserve's land was not suitable for cultivation. They also found that artificial reforestation could be a profitable enterprise, drawing on successful examples of similar programs in other states and countries. The book provides a valuable insight into the challenges and opportunities faced by those responsible for managing natural resources, balancing competing interests, and planning for the future sustainability of the environment.
