Excerpt from Selections From Mesonero Romanos
The year 1813 brought the end of the French occu patiou. In 1814 Ferdinand VII succeeded to the throne vacated by Joseph Bonaparte. The years which fol lowed, though relatively less turbulent, formed a period of intense political excitement. Mesonero was an inter ested and intelligent Spectator of events. The vivid ness of these youthful impressions is apparent to the reader of his Memoirs. At school Mesonero proved himself a diligent student, and was looking forward to a university career when a sudden calamity put an end to all such ambitions. Early in 1820 Matias Mesonero died of an apoplectic fit, and the son, then not quite seventeen years of age, found himself head of an im portant business house with a mother and a sister to support. Under the weight of these responsibilities, he tells us, the boy felt as though ten years had been added miraculously to his life. He managed the busi ness with complete success until his retirement from a mercantile career thirteen years later.
