Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book transports you to a period in the year 1012, amidst the legends and chivalry of the Middle Ages. However, the protagonist of this chivalrous tale is not a knight or courtier, but a youth born of the forest named Folco, whose pure and artless soul is inspired by a visionary passion. King Raimondo, now aged, and persuaded by his scheming Chancellor, Messer Cornelius, has summoned knights from far and wide to a Tournament of Love, where the victor shall wed the chaste Isabeau, the King's only surviving child, who always appears veiled in a cloak of snowy white. The Tournament unfolds, with knights presenting themselves before Isabeau only to be rejected until the Outlaw Knight appears, whom Cornelius tries to bar from the contest, but who successfully appeals to the King. Isabeau herself now appears, and the Tournament begins. One after another, the knights present themselves before her, only to be rejected. To the Outlaw Knight, however, she bestows a ring in pity, not in love, thus rescuing Folco's soul from despair. Angered, the other knights challenge the unexpected verdict and in turn are challenged by the Outlaw, after the King has torn from the Outlaw's shield the black cloth concealing the royal armorial bearingsâ"for this Outlaw is none other than Ethelbert, the King's nephew, who had exiled himself to make knightly amends for his father's disloyal conduct toward King Raimondo. Once more, the King's evil genius, Cornelius, prompts him to wrath against his rejoicing people. Isabeau interposes, and on her falls her father's displeasure; he condemns her to ride unclad through the city's streets at high noon of that same day. Dismay pervades the assembled multitude.
